Los Suenos Resort - Playa Herradura
December 31, 2019
Our last day in Costa Rica, we decided to make this a day to relax. Leisurely waking up we headed out for a walk to explore the resort. Los Suenos is a master planned gated golf resort community that includes a marina with shops and restaurants. So we stepped off the hotel grounds passing the resident iguanas and macaws as we walked on the resort path along the water towards the marina.
Passing the community beach club where staff were busy setting up for their annual New Years eve bash with a stage and full backdrop overlooking the Pacific. As we continued on we passed the docks, some of the best fishing in Costa Rica is off the central coast, making this a popular destination for fishing. After 20 minutes of a nice leisurely walk, we reached the Marina. Already buzzing with guests, renters and homeowners from the nearby homes, enjoying breakfast at the three restaurants located at the marina. We quickly realized Costa Rican coffee was in our future and ducked into the pastry shop for a cup to walk back to the hotel.
After arriving back to the Marriott, it was time for breakfast and then enjoying the pools and beach the 600 acre rain forest reserve grounds that the hotel have to offer. It was a perfect day, sunny about 75 degrees and quiet considering this is the ultra peak time to be visiting and the hotel was sold out. A tropical drink and lunch by the pool, the most excitement we had was a game of pool volleyball and watching the machismo iguanas chasing the lady iguanas around like conquistadors.
Come late afternoon we retreated back to our rooms and hammocks for rest before our New Years eve dinner plans. We were headed about 5 minutes off resort to El Pelicano Restaurant for what was the best meal we had in our time in Costa Rica. It was dark when we arrived so we could not see the ocean, but the beach across the street was packed with locals waiting for the New Year countdown and fireworks show at midnight. We made a reservation in advance so there was a table waiting for us in the packed restaurant when we arrived. Mostly locals, we knew we this was going to be awesome. Seafood is their specialty and they offer many of their dishes flambe which added some unique fun to the dishes. We ordered family style and enjoyed everything that we ordered and highly recommend the Sauteed Clams Appetizer, Seafood Tagliati and BBQ platter which were served flambe’ with the Arroz con Mariscos (seafood rice). Highly recommend Pelicano and the experience if staying in Playa Herradura or nearby Jaco.
Full and satisfied from dinner we opted to walk back to the resort and arrived in time for the Midnight countdown and fireworks viewing off of our hotel balcony. Perfect ending to a fantastic vacation.
We enjoyed Los Suenos it is perfectly situated as a base for staying while taking day trips to visit Arenal, Manuel Antonio, grabbing a ferry to the Peninsula or exploring any of the surrounding beach and will definitely be back!
